BOOKING INFORMATION- VICTORIAN MORNINGS

Spring 2008

THE AIM: To bring the study of domestic life in Victorian England to life through activities and role play.

PREPARATION:  Our publications can help plan preparation and follow-up work, Teacher’s Pack £6.50 inc. p&p.  Preliminary visits by teachers who have not been before is strongly recommended and is free of charge.

COSTUME: All children and adults to be in costume.  It helps set the mood if children can devise their own but we have plenty of items to borrow on the day.  GIRLS should wear plain dark clothing with a white apron and mob cap or bonnet. BOYS should wear trousers tucked into socks, long-sleeved shirt and dark sweater, waistcoat and cap.

N.B. DRESS WARMLY - THE MUSEUM IS COLDER THAN SCHOOL.

NUMBERS:     Maximum of 35 children per session, more by special arrangement. 1 adult per 8 children.

DISCIPLINE: Teachers and parent helpers are responsible for ensuring good behaviour and reminding the children that the museum is not a playground. Artefacts and exhibits should not be touched without permission and supervision.

ACTIVITIES:  These usually include the Victorian schoolroom, a close look at the Victorian kitchen, and a domestic activity such as Washing, Butter-making, or rag-rug making.

ORGANISATION:  The visit starts with an introductory talk to the whole group, after which we divide into 3 groups usually (sometimes 4) - each one doing each activity in turn, spending about 20 minutes at each one. This leaves time for looking round the rest of the museum and shopping.

DURATION:   We recommend a maximum of 2 hours for a visit.

PACKED LUNCHES:  We have a large garden for use in fine weather, but only very limited indoor facilities.  The Parish Hall nearby can be hired for a nominal sum, further details on request.

SPECIAL NEEDS:  We make every effort to accommodate special needs children and they usually find the visit very rewarding.  About two thirds of the museum is accessible to visitors in wheelchairs.

TOILETS:  There are 4 toilets at the museum, one with wheelchair access.

SHOPPING:  We do appreciate it when children are allowed to spend a little money in our shop as we are entirely self supporting.

PRICE:  £ 3.00 PER CHILD, one adult free with every 10 children, extra adults at full rate
