Hornsea Pottery : Exhibition

An exhibition of 51 years of Hornsea Pottery was  opened by Paul Atterbury designer of exhibitions for the V & A and expert on the BBC’s Antique Road Show on 17th March 2005 at Hornsea Folk Museum .

It is a comprehensive display of Hornsea Pottery which was started ‘from nothing’ by Desmond and Colin Rawson in 1949. and covers two rooms with about 2000 pieces on display.  Serious students may view the collections in store by arrangement.

The work of local designers John Clappison and Marion Campbell was continued by Alan Luckham, Martin Hunt, Matthew Hancock and Robin Pavitt and is now collected by many.

The project was made possible by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Hornsea Market Town Initiative and the work of the Museum’s devoted volunteers. Together they have created a tribute to the vision of the designers, the skill and ingenuity of the engineers and production team, and the drive of the sales force that sent the award winning pottery to 60 countries worldwide.

It was a truly sad day for Hornsea when the factory closed in March 2000.

The volunteers in the town’s Museum have indeed provided a fitting memorial to a memorable era.
