July 2003 : Museum 'Pottery Lottery' Bid Successful !
|
Hornsea Museum has successfully bid for funding towards the redisplay and storage of its Hornsea Pottery collection. The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded £133 000 to the museum towards the cost of purchasing No 15 Newbegin and converting it into additional museum space. The new museum area will be accessible from the main site, and there will be a new display in Swallow Cottage introducing visitors to the history of the Pottery. The first floor of number 15 Newbegin will be fitted out as a store for the collection. A museum designer will be employed to help with the layout of the pottery displays. The museum has the largest public collection of Hornsea Pottery, since acquiring much of the factory shop stock when the factory closed in 2000. The Heritage Lottery Trustees, who awarded the grant at a meeting in June, were impressed at the museum's foresight in collecting the products of Hornsea Pottery. The factory was for many years the foremost employer in Hornsea and therefore a crucial part of the history of the town. The museum aims to have the new displays in place for August 2004. |
