School Visits Information
There are 2 options for school visits to Hornsea Museum :- ORDINARY VISIT or VICTORIAN ACTIVITIES
· ORDINARY VISIT. Your group will receive an introductory talk which takes about 5 minutes, and then be split up into smaller groups depending on how many adult helpers you have brought, we recommend a ratio of no more than 8 children to 1 adult. The group leaders will be given a set of notes and each group will be started in a different part of the museum to avoid overcrowding. Allow 1 to 2 hours for your visit depending on the age of the children. Copies of the notes used are available in our Teacher's Pack (see below). Maximum 45 children.
· VICTORIAN ACTIVITIES. We wear costume for this and like the children to make an attempt at coming in costume, but have plenty of dressing - up clothes to supplement their efforts. After a short introductory talk, the children are split into 3 groups for the activities which include the VICTORIAN SCHOOLROOM, a domestic activity such as WASHING, RAG-RUG MAKING or BUTTERMAKING, and a close look at the VICTORIAN KITCHEN, after which there is time to look round the rest of the museum. Allow 2 hours for your visit. Maximum 35 children, plus 3 or 4 adults. |
· SPECIAL NEEDS. We make every effort to accommodate groups with learning difficulties and other special needs. About two thirds of the site is accessible to wheelchair users.
· TEACHER'S PACK. Contains all the information you will need to prepare for a visit, particularly useful if you have not been before, as well as background material relating to Victorian domestic life. £6.50 inc. p. & p.
· SHOP. We are entirely self-supporting, therefore appreciate it very much if children are allowed to spend a little pocket money in our shop at the end of their visit. Visit the Shop .
· PACKED LUNCH. We have a large garden for use by summer visitors, but only limited indoor facilities. The Parish Hall, close by, is available at modest rates for lunchtime bookings, details on application.
· TOILETS. There are 4 toilets at the museum, one with disabled access.
· FREE VISIT. We recommend teachers to make a free preliminary visit before bringing a school party.
